Montecito Sports is a unique specialty sports store that has served Santa Barbara for over 30 years in tennis, squash, running, swimming & other specialty sports. You'll find great technical and casual clothing for men and women. Here is a special shopping experience not found in Big Box-type stores or formula chain stores whose only commitment is to the bottom line and stockholders. Also, we were way ahead of solely "on-line" stores whose only real commitment is to selling the most for the least being the biggest predator on the block and who rely on stores like ours to provide the on-the-floor service, advice and use of demos. We choose the merchandise we carry on the basis of quality, functionality, manufacturer reputation, price/value relationships and often carry smaller more emerging brands not found in larger stores. We will ship to the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Western Europe and give personalized expert advice and information over the phone or via E-mail. We do what we sell so you'll find passion and first hand experience in our advice and humble opinions.
Tennis being where we originated, we have a long and colorful history in the sport. The owner, Steve Ruggles, has been a player for 40 years, playing high school tennis at Upland High where he was a league singles and doubles champion and a round of 16 finisher in CIF competition. He then played college tennis for Chaffey College where he was a league singles champion and doubles runner-up. He then went on to play for UCSB and was awarded at graduation with the top student/athlete honors. He taught in the summers. Steve and others stringers in the store have strung for many pros including Andy Roddick, Marty Riessen, Jimmy Conners, Roscoe Tanner & the late Bobby Riggs. Montecito Sports has also been the choice of local celebrities, famous chefs and heads-of-state. Among them are (to unabashedly name-drop) Kenny Loggins, Jimmny Messinna, Michael McDonald, Jonathan Winters, Julia Child, Jane Seymour, Kevin Costner, Cher, Michael Douglas, Itzak Perlman, Dennis Miller, Ivan Lendl, Fess Parker, Rob Lowe, Kathy Ireland, Oprah Winfrey, Sigorney Weaver, Dennis Franz, Fannie Flagg, Sue Grafton former secretary-of-state Warren Christopher, journalist Sam Donaldson, Jerry Spence and many others. Currently you'll find: Fred Charbolais, an experienced player and stringer here 5-6 days a week. Cameron DeAragon, Santa Barbara City College team member. Nancy Wheeler, teaching pro from Hawaii who's relocated to Santa Barbara. Hayley Cox, tennis and soccer player, who is also at Cal. Zoe Ruggles (Welsh Corgi on the "contact us") Chief Security Officer, (how much longer she holds her position is in review since there are a lot of missing tennis balls and video tape evidence of sleeping while on the job). Over the last 35 years Montecito Sports has evolved into many other specialty areas including running, swimming, fitness, fine casual clothing, beach wear, sports watches and sport sunglasses. We are always experimenting and keeping things lively. Don't be surprised if you see something new here; it is not unusual to find some of the more unique and esoteric equipment and clothing at Montecito Sports.
